Activities
Parish Bible Discussion Group
We are a discussion group, seeking to discover the relevance of the Bible and its message, not just to
our own personal lives, but also to various issues in the Church and Society today.
We normally meet on the first and third Mondays in the month at 7 Bourchier Close from 8pm to 10pm.
Do join us if you can—you will be very welcome.
....and....
Whether you are looking for a quiet place for reflection or a chance to join in with a very sociable
community, St Luke's has probably got something you will be interested in. Listed below are some
details of the various activities that are on offer at the Church.
Children & Young People
A crèche is provided every Sunday during the 10.15am service in the Parish Room. This enables
infants to be cared for during all or part of the services as seem appropriate to their parents.
Tiny Ones Together Service - TOTS
A chance to sing action songs, play, listen to Bible stories and make new friends. Every Monday (term
time only) 10.15am - 11.15amFree of charge. Refreshments provided for all.
A warm welcome to all with babies and pre-school children.
Breakfast Brigade
Meets on the first Sunday of each month. This is an opportunity for the younger members of the
Church to join together for breakfast (cooked by themselves) and to join in a short discussion or
activity.
Junior Church
St Luke's Junior Church is busy throughout the year. We welcome children to our Junior Church, where
they can make new friends and learn about the Christian way of life. The children meet in the church
hall at 10.15am (except on the first Sunday of each month, when they join the congregation at the
Family Service) and would normally join their families in time to receive a blessing at the altar rail.
Activities for Adults
The Choir
The main task of a Church Choir is to add beauty and splendour to the services and, in particular, to
add poignancy to the different liturgical seasons.
St Luke's has a renowned musical life. The choir consists of about twenty choristers and these form
the basis of the musical foundation of St Luke's. The choir sing at the 10.15am worship every Sunday
and in addition, they attend Festival services, occasional weddings, funerals and memorial services.
They occasionally deputise for the Rochester Cathedral choir during holiday periods. Its repertoire
includes music from all periods.
The choir meets in church on Thursday evenings at 7.45pm. New members are always welcome.
Bible Study Groups
The purpose of the Bible Sharing Groups is for learning about God's word, sharing it together and, as a
result, deepening fellowship and friendship in the parish. Groups change from time to time, but usually
there is an afternoon and an evening group meeting. Groups are very mixed in ages and sexes and in
knowledge and Christian experience.
Fellowship Group
The Fellowship group - open to both men and women - meets in St Luke's hall on the fourth Thursday
of the month at 2.00pm. Talks are arranged during the year, a Christmas lunch and an outing in the
summer to a place of interest are all part of the programme. Tea, biscuits and chat is part of every
meeting. There is also a Bring & Buy stall at the meeting the profits of which go to charity Click here to
see the program of events
Book Groups
Two book groups meet at St Luke's - one meeting bi-monthly on a Friday lunchtime to discuss a
specific book, primarily a new or classic Christian book. The other also meets bi-monthly but in the
evening. This group looks at our more general reading and recommending good books.
Pastoral Visitors
The Pastoral visitors meet monthly for about an hour with the parish priest and the pastoral assistant.
They meet to plan pastoral visits - for example to newly bereaved people, to newlyweds and to parents
whose children have been baptised recently at St Luke's. Also the group undertakes visits to members
of the congregation who are house-bound, alone or ill and its members visit newcomers to the parish.
The meeting always begins with worship and prayer.
The Social Scene
The Social Committee is involved in arranging the various social events in the parish such as the
Shrove Tuesday party, Harvest Supper, Passover meal and newcomers parties. Members are also
involved in organising refreshments for official parish events.
