THE CHARITY FOR NOVEMBER IS SEVENOAKS AREA YOUTH TRUST

When Jane Down left in August 2007 we never expected it to take almost a year to find a replacement. But our prayers have been answered and Phil Taylor has now joined us and is settling in well. Phil will be the SAYT/St Mary’s Kemsing youth worker.

SAYT’s current structure is to employ two professional youth workers, but we also know that the effect of their work is likely to be greater and longer lasting when supported by volunteer youth workers. So during the 11 months we have been trying to recruit a second full time youth worker, there has been a major opportunity for our team of volunteers to develop further their youth work skills and relationships with the young people. They have progressed brilliantly. One example of this is a shared interest in fishing! Where a year ago we were struggling with the behaviour of a group of the young men, now they are engaging more and greater respect has developed – thanks to a chub or two and the willingness of some volunteers to be out with them on the riverbanks.

Only through the enthusiastic support of our volunteers have we been able to continue running our detached sessions on the Greatness estate and in Kemsing throughout the year. Now we are looking at the possibility of setting up a new session in Westerham.

Judith Cork and Phil are continuing to develop their work in secondary schools, spending time on the playground at lunchtime and supporting the youth awards scheme running in Wildernesse and running a Youth Alpha course at Bradbourne Christian Union.

In conclusion, Judith Cork would like to say “Thank you for making SAYT St Luke’s Cause for the Month. I can assure you that SAYT greatly appreciates your financial and prayerful support. If you would like more information about what is happening within SAYT or to find out about training to be a volunteer youth worker please talk to Peter Ashwell (01732 461087). Do pick up a copy of SAYT’s latest newsletter, which is available at the back of the Church or by emailing info@sayt.org.uk , judith@sayt.org.uk or phil@sayt.org.uk.”
