Music and Choirs

Choirs

We have a long-standing tradition of choral music-making at St Luke’s, from our Sunday choir, to Junior choir and mid-week lunch time recitals.  Our Sunday choir is made up of volunteer adults and child choristers and leads the congregation in singing the hymns and communion settings at our weekly 10:15am Sunday service. The choir also regularly sings anthems during these services from the large and varied choral library held at St Luke’s.  We sing music spanning the whole range of the Anglian choral tradition, from early music right through to contemporary works. We are always keen to welcome new members to the choir – if you are interested in joining please get in touch with the Choir Director, Alex Clark, at lukesevenoaks.choirdirector@gmail.com.

Our Junior Church meets during the 10:15 Sunday service in term time (except for the 1st Sunday of the month being an All-Age Eucharist) with all school age children welcome.  The Junior Choir rehearse during Junior Church sessions and sing regularly at our All-Age services – both with the main Sunday choir and in solo performances.

Choral Scholarships

St Luke’s operates a choral scholarship scheme for secondary school pupils giving a wonderful opportunity for young people to experience the joys of and develop their skills in choral singing.  From September 2025, we are looking to appoint Junior and Senior Choral Scholars of secondary school age (11 – 18 years) to join and grow our choir. There are two levels of scholars – Junior scholars aged 11 – 14+, and Senior scholars aged 14 – 18 – who  sing at Sunday morning services twice a month.  In recognition of the commitment of the scholars a small annual honorarium is awarded.

St Luke’s Sevenoaks welcomes applications from prospective choral scholars.   Please see the information pack below for full details and complete the application form which can be emailed to the Choir Director at lukesevenoaks.choirdirector@gmail.com.

Organ and Organist

Our organist, Mark Edwards, studied the organ at Norwich Cathedral and St Peter Mancroft, Norwich as a Norwich Diocesan Organ Scholar before becoming Organ Scholar at Exeter University. Prior to arriving at St Luke's he also held long-term posts as Director of Music at St Michael's, Chester Square in Belgravia and Assistant Organist at Holy Trinity, Guildford.

We are very lucky at St Luke’s to have a modern, versatile organ that provides excellent accompaniment capability to our choir and congregation as well as allowing visiting recitalists a broad opportunity of programme. The organ was built and installed in 2013 by Rodgers organ builders from Oregon, USA. It is a sophisticated three manual instrument and rare example of a hybrid organ that seamlessly combines choruses of traditional organ pipes with choruses of electric digital stops thereby providing the full spectrum of tonal requirements for organ repertoire performance and choir accompaniment – from fanfare trumpets to a 32' reed to 'cymbelstern' bells.
